How can I guess something is wrong if you don’t tell me what you think? Too often, we think people will feel or see things as we do. But that’s a big lie to ourselves, a way to find relief in blaming others. If you don’t communicate what you think, you miss an opportunity to change the situation. As time passes, the gap widens and that’s when things get really worse. If you feel like a love, friend or work relationship is getting bad, you should speak up now or give up straight away. However, it’s not always easy to gather our thoughts and have the courage to speak up. If it happens to you in a work relationship, I strongly recommend you to have a look at this Twitter thread from Julie Zhuo. She describes a really straightforward process that you can quickly put in place to see if you receive some reciprocity. Because, of course, a relationship is still a team effort that sometimes just needs the momentum of one of the parties to get back on track. Don’t waste your energy on a one-way relationship.
‘’Counterintuitively, by appearing less "perfect" and more "works-in-progress", the people who showed their work early and often earned more impact, respect, learnings, and promotions.’’ I'm learning this lesson very slowly and still struggle sometimes but I can’t agree more. It is so much more rewarding to show your ‘’work-in-progress’’ than waiting for the ‘’perfect-in-your-eyes work’’. In a recent Twitter’s thread, Julie Zhuo shares 5 reasons why it is so powerful. Faster execution, deeper feedback, process learnings, improved trust, team learnings. I will only add a personal disclaimer: as far as you don’t share your ‘’work-in-progress’’ only to let others find solutions and take responsibility for you, it should be a beneficial practice for everyone.
It’s interesting to judge the quality of our collective spirit through the prism of ownership. As a leader, this can really help you understand why your team is struggling or, as a team member, why you can feel cast aside. Asking to yourself or your team to position themselves on this ladder can help you/them reconsider your/their own value within the collective. It takes responsibility and investment to have and deserve ownership. I truly believe that your job, as a team member, is more than just delivering your work, it’s also facilitating and empowering the work of your colleagues/collaborators/pairs.
