I had kept aside this highlight for a long time but didn’t find a way to tackle the subject until yesterday, when my wife recommended me a video about freedom. What is freedom? Can we even be free? According to Philosef, a French Youtuber, freedom can only be a feeling. Here is a synthesis of his explanations. Freedom is a feeling and results of the absence of constraints, but is it even possible to have no constraints at all? Well, you experience it everyday, life is an infinite and perpetual series of constraints. We live in constraints. No matter what you think, we’re dependent of the good will of many things to survive/live: our body, our mind, our environment, others, … Of course you can feel free for short periods of time. That moment when you escape from reality and forget about everything that surrounds you. But that’s an ephemeral feeling, we’re very quickly caught up by life. But what makes it even more true and inevitably indisputable in my eyes is that our sole conscience is an absolute constraint. The best examples are when we feel bored or when we need to make choices. Some may say we have no constraint when being bored but in fact, boredom is the constraint. We are conscious of our self going in circles, it drives us crazy. It is exactly the same with choices. When you have choices you have to take decisions and undeniably you can risk to feel regrets. We all have a conscience, and by consequence, are permanently constrained. The only way to find peace is to (1) solely see freedom as a feeling you can enjoy for short periods of time, (2) accept that we live in perpetual constraints and (3) acknowledge that everything relies on everything else. We can’t fight against that. A world without constraints is not a world, it’s nothingness.
